茅山以道教闻世。1998年，句容市在茅山元符万宁宫道祖广场上，塑造了道教始祖太上老君的神像。神像净高33米、重达106吨，由226块特制紫铜板焊接而成，是目前世界上较高的道教神像，现已入选吉尼斯记录。
