西沃石窟位于新安县正北40公里西沃村东、黄河南岸的垂直峭壁间。它背靠青要山，面临黄河水。自东向西依次有浮雕石塔四座，石窟两座。在塔与石窟间有若干个小佛龛。西沃石窟是黄河中下游岸边的唯一的一处北魏石窟，它的发现，为我国石窟寺艺术研究增添了一项新资料，为确认北魏石刻佛像型式建立了年代学上的依据。
